Evolutionary Urbanism
Myself and partners Mark Turibius Jongman-Sereno and Mira Kartika Irawan developed a theoretical solution to a future without cars. What will become of the extensive vehicular infrastructure that criss-crosses our country? We developed a theoretical intervention using a real site in San Francisco. By reimagining the parking garage as a road into the sky, we need only populate it with destinations.

We placed an 800 person music hall and public park at the top of the spiraling ramp to create a destination at the garage's precipice.
The wide vehicle path allowed us enough space to maintain a generous walkway while cutting a shifting atrium through the existing slabs.
It is located near the Ferry building and Bay Bridge, making it a natural extension of the existing waterfront. New, multi-story building blocks could be built around the existing garage structure, creating a true street front experience.
Necessary programmatic adjacencies are located vertically, with internal circulation added as an extension outside the existing structure's floor plates. Multi-story art, music, and garden experiences are possible with this vertical arrangement.
